Literacy - Reading Workshop

To support pupils to become confident, competent independent Readers and to instil within them a life-long love of reading.

For Schools

How do pupils learn to read and why is Reading important?

The skill of reading is not naturally embedded within us the way speaking is. Rather, it necessitates explicit and structured teaching. Reading empowers us to acquire knowledge, cultivate skills and broaden our vocabulary.

Reading for pleasure has also been scientifically shown to have a favourable effect on a person’s future achievements and it promotes mental wellness. Ultimately, reading equips pupils with the necessary resources to flourish in life and establish meaningful bonds with others.

What’s in the course?

  • Understanding how the brain learns and the impact this has on teaching pupils to read

  • Implementing the “5 Pillars of Reading” as a systematic approach to reading success

  • The importance of sequence and phonics

  • Using scaffolds to support struggling or reticent Readers

  • Vocabulary development and building contextual knowledge

  • Fostering a passion for reading amongst pupils and nurturing their confidence

“Caroline has an immense amount of patience and empathy and has provided my children with invaluable Literacy skills that they will be using for the rest of their lives. My youngest son struggled with reading and would avoid books at all costs. He now reads each evening and loves to share what his stories are about. Her gentle nature, empowering support, wisdom and understanding has meant that whatever academic challenges my boys have faced have been ironed out quickly.”
