Literacy - Spelling Workshop
To assist pupils to become proficient Spellers and to develop their literacy skills to enhance written work.
For Schools
Why do we need to teach children how to Spell?
Spelling is a complex developmental process which involves transforming speech sounds (phonemes) into letters (graphemes) within a word. It is not simply an act of memory.
Words that are memorised do not embed themselves into our long-term memory. Therefore, pupils need to learn how to correctly analyse words, to recognise patterns, and to consistently apply their spelling rules to become proficient spellers.
What’s in the course?
Developing a strong understanding of sound-symbol relationships
Utilising interactive activities as a strategy to reinforce this sound-symbol knowledge
Understanding the stages of spelling development
The importance of explicitly teaching spelling rules and strategies to pupils
Supporting pupils to enhance their written work and improve their literacy skills
“My daughter has Dyslexia and she struggles to apply her spelling rules when writing. Terry has helped her to build from the basics again and confidently apply these strategies to communicate her thoughts on paper.”
